Lady Gaga is opening up about how her personal struggles with “mania and chaos” informed her portrayal of Harley Quinn in the upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux, directed by Todd Phillips. In an interview with Vogue for its October cover, Gaga shared how her interpretation of the iconic character was shaped by her own emotional experiences.
The Oscar-winning artist revealed that while Harley Quinn is a familiar figure in pop culture, she approached the role from a different perspective. “My experience with mania and chaos inside… it creates a quietness,” Gaga explained. “Sometimes women are labeled as overly emotional or unhinged. But when things become broken from reality, what if it makes you… quiet?”
Gaga’s method for developing Harley came from a “sense-memory” approach, drawing from her own feelings of being braced and intense in the world. She added, “What happens when you cover up all of the complexities beneath the surface?”
Beyond discussing her role in Joker: Folie à Deux, Gaga also reflected on her relationship with fiancé Michael Polansky, whom she quarantined with during the pandemic. She credited their time together as a transformative period in her life, giving her the chance to reset after the turmoil she faced during the release of her album Chromatica. “I was in a really dark place,” she said, but Polansky helped her find happiness and health once again.
Alongside her upcoming film, Gaga is continuing her music career with new projects, including a single titled “Die With a Smile” with Bruno Mars, and an upcoming album, referred to as LG7, which is set to be released in February.
Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theaters on October 4.
